Weaving Through the Strands

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards divide the math curriculum into eight strands. This project promoted parental understanding of the math curriculum and supported them to work with their children. Grant funds were used to create math take home kits which included a literature book with a math theme and math activities related to each math strand. Totally Mathematical Snacks

Grant funds paid for a convection oven and cooking utensils so that kindergarten students can build math vocabulary and understand key math concepts by preparing and eating snacks. Team members: Karen Previtte, project manager; Tina Reynolds, Donna Levine, Carolyn Lorber and Sandra Arndt.

Learning Buddies Build Math Skills and Friendships

A class of OWE students from Heights High works on math skills each week with a targeted group of Noble students from all grades. The grant was used to fund games and supplies needed to make educational materials for the learning buddies to use together. This project replicates a previously funded project at Fairfax in a new setting with a different group of targeted students. Learning Buddies

A class of high school students enrolled in the OWE program makes weekly visits to Fairfax to play math games and participate in other math activities with a class of third graders. The interaction is designed to generate friendships and contribute to the academic, motivational and personal esteem of both groups.
