Senior Citizen Outreach

Lifeskills classes, Drama Club and the Band and Orchestra at Roxboro Middle School will combine their talents to host and entertain senior citizens and residents of area nursing homes. The funds will make it possible for the Lifeskills class to prepare dinner for their guests who will be entertained by the Band and Orchestra students and a production of Grease.

Harley Goldstein Memorial Project

The Roxboro staff and community initiated this project to honor the memory of Harley Goldstein, 17 year teacher who taught history, led student activities and coached tennis with a passion! Goldstein died of cancer in 1999. This project will involve the community in honoring his contributions by beautifying and improving the tennis court area.

Family Math and Science Nights

Gearity School was full of scientific and mathematical investigation on five different evenings in January and February as a way to increase comfort and confidence in these two important disciplines, and to give parents helpful tools for practicing math and science at home.

Fairfax Community Group

Fairfax fifth graders can volunteer for the Fairfax Community Group, a community service club. This year the club adopted and visited senior citizens at Judson Park, and worked with Cedar-Lee Merchants on clean-up projects and a career luncheon.

The Multi-Media/Multi Modality Approach to teaching Students

Take Home Math Games

Fairfax teachers used this grant to create math games for the first, second and third graders that reinforce concepts related to all eight math strands. The students may take the games home which makes it easier for parents to work with their children on math. Learning Buddies

Once a week Heights High Occupational Work Experience (OWE) students visit Boulevard Elementary School and work with a targeted group of fourth graders who need extra help in math. Grant funds provided supplies for math games and other materials that the buddies use together. The project replicates the program at Fairfax and Noble. Integrating Technology into the Math Curriculum

Accelerated Math

This grant made it possible to for the 5th grade teachers to use a computer to generate and score math work sheets that are targeted to the skills each student needs to improve. The system gives students immediate feedback and frees their teachers to spend more time teaching the skills.
