Adapting Literacy Material for All Early Learners

To address the specific learning styles of preschoolers with disabilities, the staff at Millikin will adapt popular stories to make them easier to handle, manipulate, share and discuss. A device called the Bookworm will be purchased that allows speech output to be added to the pages of any book allowing children to hear the text read aloud. A family in-service will be held and copies of each story will be made for families to borrow and use at home for reinforcement. Funds will be used for the book adaptation supplies, Bookworm devices and refreshments for the family in-service.

Outside the Museum Walls – Science to Go

The program will be provided to 80 preschool students who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2005.

75 years of Canterbury Tales

Canterbury will work with Kulture Kids Inc. to implement an interdisciplinary approach to celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary. Artists-in-residence will work with all classrooms throughout the school year to explore the history of their school and community through writing, performance, and the visual arts. A bound record of the history of the school will be produced and a student-produced performance event will be held in the spring.

Silk of Heroes

After conducting research and writing on a personal hero, 7th graders at Wiley will create a silk scarf incorporating images and symbols of their hero. Funds will be used to pay for a visiting silk artist and for supplies to create the scarves.

Roots of American Music (ROAM)

Students will explore several citizenship standards through an arts integration program offered by Roots of American Music. Teachers will work with the artists to develop specific connections between the curriculum and the musicianís activities. They will create instruments work with maps and time lines write songs perform for families and the community keep journals and record a CD.
