Fifteen to twenty PRIDE tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students will meet after school to read, write and discuss African American history and literature. Students will examine historic and current education opportunities available to African Americans and will include family members in the discussions. Funds will provide materials and guest speakers.

PATH Senior Citizens Days

Senior citizens bring their cars to Heights High Auto Tech dept to have their cars checked. While they wait, Diversified Health students will take seniors’ blood pressure. Funds will pay for snacks and flowers for the senior citizens and lunch for students and teachers.

English Language Learners

To help English learners improve language skills and become familiar with the community, students will visit their new schools, and local points of interest – including the Shaker Lakes Nature Center, the West Side Market and the CH-UH Library (where students will receive library cards). Families will be invited to join the excursions. Funds will be used by the student to purchase small items, learn to make change and use English in community settings.

Inclusion/Co-Teaching Initiative

Funds will pay for planning and release time for Canterbury special and regular education teachers. The goal is to improve instruction in the inclusion classrooms at each grade level. $1,500 will come from the School Team Grant funds and $300 from the Inclusion fund, started by parents to support the CH-UH co-teaching program housed at Canterbury.

Ohio Heroes’ Day

Ohio history author Rick Sowash will spend a day in each elementary school in March 2009. He will hold all-school assemblies and focused visits with 4th grade students. Starting in January, fourth graders will research famous Ohioans, and will portray historic Ohioans at school assemblies. Content is aligned with the fifth grade Ohio Social Studies Achievement test.

Digital Technology Studio

The art teacher has been working with staff to integrate technology in the classroom. Projects that support literacy – student produced raps – have been very successful in exciting students to write. Funds will purchase Macintosh computers, scanner, digital camera and other materials for the studio. The teacher also received a $2,500 grant for the studio from a private funding source.

Youth of Promise

45 boys will be selected to participate in a mentoring and guidance program to improve student behavior and academic achievement. Students will meet monthly for discussions and guest speakers. Parents/guardians will join the boys for many of the meetings. Funds will pay for materials and speaker gratuities.

Preparing our Freshman to Leave Legacy

Link Crew Leaders

Heights High juniors and seniors ― the Link Crew Leaders ― have been trained to mentor freshmen students and help ease the transition to high school. Several school year activities will link the freshman students with the Link Crew Leaders. The funds will pay for distinctive tee-shirts for the Link Crew Leaders.
