Twenty-one teams of innovative educators in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school district have been awarded Reaching Heights grants totaling $16,780 in support of projects that will be completed by the end of the current school year.

One of this year's grants expands last year's successful poetry slam to additional schools.

Reaching Heights, an independent citizen organization founded in 1989, is dedicated to helping every student in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District receive an excellent education, with the engaged support of the entire community. Toward that goal, Reaching Heights approved 14 School Team Grants worth a total of $15,025, and seven Community Connection Grants worth $1,750. School Team Grants of up to $1,500 support projects that address specific achievement needs; Community Connections Grants of up to $250 support projects that connect our schools with our community

Literacy projects are the focus of six School Team Grants, including a book club in the Legacy School at Cleveland Heights High School, Chinese cultural books and programs at Roxboro Elementary School, and a Poetry Club at Gearity and Canterbury Elementary Schools and Roxboro Middle School.

Two grants help pay for technology to help improve instruction at Boulevard Elementary and Legacy School at Heights High. Other projects include a math club at Roxboro Elementary, a science lab at Boulevard, an anti-bullying program at Wiley Middle School and a virtual summit for African American Males in middle and high school.

“We’re proud to support these projects, which address students’ needs in our district and are primarily fueled by the energy and innovative ideas of our teachers,” said Reaching Heights Executive Director Patrick Mullen. “We’re honored to provide this seed money to teachers for projects that encourage collaboration and provide valuable experiences for students.”

Community Connection Grants for 2009-10 include a mentoring program for boys at Monticello, a leadership development program for Heights High girls, and an opportunity for Heights High science students to travel to Fairfax Elementary and help teach ecology lessons.

Grant funds are raised from the Reaching Heights Adult Community Spelling Bee (the 19th Annual Bee will take place April 21, 2010 in the Heights High auditorium), Thank-A-Teacher donations and individual donors.
