Dallas Schubert, a Reaching Heights trustee, said this about becoming a public school advocate: “At times our community has been divided over issues involving the public schools. We want to see this community come together in support of our children and schools. You can help to achieve this by becoming an active advocate. Let everyone you know, know why you support our schools.”
We suggest these eight simple ways to be an advocate for our schools.
Talk about positive experiences you, your kids or neighbors have had with the schools. Talk about special teachers, unique projects, extracurricular opportunities or academic achievements.
Seek out neighbors, especially those with preschoolers, and help them learn about our schools. Invite them to tour your neighborhood school. Put them in touch with other neighbors using the schools.
Don't be defensive. Your choice to send your kids to Cleveland Heights-University Heights schools is just that - a choice.
Bring a friend to a musical performance, play or sporting event at one of our schools.
Email positive news or personal experiences to your list of friends, even those who don't live in the district. They influence people too.
If you haven't been to one of our schools in awhile, volunteer. You'll see good news and good people all around you.
Or email letters to the editor. Not just the Sun Press, The Plain Dealer too. Praise a teacher, celebrate a program, applaud our successes.
