Reaching Heights Awards Jazz Scholarship

Each spring, Reaching Heights awards a scholarship for a year of music lessons to a promising member of the Heights High Jazz Ensemble who is identified by their director as a significant contributor to the band.  The award is named for James Bane, long-time director of the jazz band.

Lena Console is the winner for 2007.  She joined the trumpet section of the jazz band as a freshman and quickly demonstrated her skills as an outstanding musician. Jazz band director Brett Baker is impressed by her willingness to improvise and solo and to explore jazz as a new challenge. She has three more years to grow and share her skills with the band.

Lena started on her instrument as a 4th grader at Fairfax School with music teacher Pam Adamson.

Reaching Heights created the award in 1997 to honor retiring Heights High Jazz Ensemble leader, James Bane.
