International Baccalaureate World Schools (IB)

February 12, 2016

In the CH-UH City School District, we have 2 IB World Schools, Roxboro Elementary and Roxboro Middle.  We also have 2 IB Candidate Schools, Monticello Middle and Canterbury Elementary.  What is IB and how does a school become authorized as an IB World School?  Here are the basics from the IB Organization and the IB Ohio websites.

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IB), based in Geneva, Switzerland offers a framework of international education to more than 555,000 IB students at 2,098 schools in 125 countries. The IB organization has 4 programs for students aged 3 to 19 help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.

Primary Years Programme (PYP) - Elementary Schools

Middle Years Programme (MYP) - Middle Schools

Diploma Programme (DP) - High School Grades 11 & 12

Career-related Programme (CP) - High School Certificate

The IB framework aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

Candidate schools must show that they have both the infrastructure and the skills in place to deliver the IB Programme at each level, and that they share IB’s values and beliefs.

Schools must also:

  • appoint an IB Coordinator - to lead the programme and communicate with IB, Inc.

  • show that they can deliver the IB Programme to the IB’s high standards.

  • commit to the mandatory professional development of educators

  • give reasons why the IB Programme is not offered to all students, if the IB considers this to be appropriate in a particular case

  • ensure that the student experience is continuous, in cases where a school chooses to offer other IB programmes.

The IB’s standard authorization process has 2 phases.

(1) Consideration phase - Request for candidacy (application), and decision on candidacy

(2) Candidate phase - Request for authorization, and decision on authorization

Teachers must also take specialist training that runs concurrently with the school’s authorization process - and the IB will visit the school for a verification visit during the candidate phase. Becoming an IB school is a demanding process that takes from 18 months to three years.

There are fees associated with the Authorization Process, professional development of teachers and administrators, and assessments.
